Activity Report: Student Innovation and Technical Skill Development Activities at KGEC

Kalyani Government Engineering College (KGEC) organised two significant student-centric activities in 2026 to promote innovation, technical skill development and engagement with emerging technologies.

During September and October 2026, Dev Community, Kalyani Government Engineering College (KGEC), organised two significant technical activities to promote practical learning, collaborative development and open-source participation among students.

1. Internal Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2026: The Internal Smart India Hackathon was conducted on 29 August 2026 at KGEC to encourage students to develop innovative, technology-driven solutions to real-world problems identified by government bodies, public sector undertakings, and private organisations. A total of 52 teams participated in the internal round. Students worked collaboratively on problem analysis, solution development, technical documentation, and presentations. Eight jury members from industry evaluated the proposed solutions based on relevance, innovation, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and technical strength. The top 10 teams were identified for further consideration to represent the college at the national-level Smart India Hackathon 2026. The event strengthened students' teamwork, problem-solving, design-thinking, and presentation skills. SIH_report-26-1

2. Road to Devcon Kolkata – Campus Edition: The event was organised by Developers' Community KGEC in collaboration with ETH Kolkata on 18 September 2026 at the AAB Seminar Hall, North Block, KGEC. The programme introduced students to the Ethereum ecosystem, Web3 development, blockchain technology, decentralised applications (dApps), open-source communities, and career opportunities in the Web3 domain. Participants also learned about Devcon 8 India, scheduled to take place in Mumbai, and explored opportunities for networking and participation in global developer communities. The event received 162 registrations, of which 98 were approved, with 40 participants attending. The interactive session encouraged students to pursue practical learning, participate in hackathons, and contribute to open-source projects.

3. A Git and GitHub Workshop was conducted on 25th September 2026 at the Seminar Hall of the Academic cum Administrative Building, KGEC. The workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of version control, Git commands, repository management, branching, merging and collaborative development using GitHub. A hands-on session was organised where participants created GitHub accounts, developed a simple calculator project and uploaded it to their respective GitHub repositories. The workshop helped students understand the importance of version control and collaborative software development in academic projects, hackathons and internships.

4. Subsequently, Hacktoberfest Hack Day Kalyani × Dev Community was organised on 4th October 2026 at KGEC as part of Hacktoberfest 2026. The event witnessed more than 425 registrations, from which 85 participants were selected, with over 80 students attending. Participants worked in teams across five challenge tracks, developing projects through hands-on coding, mentoring and technical guidance. Industry professionals from organisations including Red Hat, CESC, Graphify Labs, Craftyedge Solutions and TCS participated as judges and mentors. Technical talks, project demonstrations and competitive evaluation formed important components of the programme. Five winning teams were recognised, with prizes distributed to the winners.
